There may be good news for men dealing with erectile dysfunction. A study published in the Journal of Urology shows that one natural herb may be able to help.
The study comes from Dr. Bumsik Hong of the University of Ulsan College of Medicine in Seoul.
Now other experts have reviewed his findings and they’re offering their support.
“There is hard scientific evidence that certain active ingredients in [this herb] have sexual effects,” says Dr. Edward Rosick of Penn State University.
Stronger Erections in Just 8 Weeks
The herb at work here is ginseng. But not just any ginseng…Dr. Hong used Korean red ginseng-a specially harvested and treated variety of Panax ginseng.
He set up a study with 45 men to put it to the test. Most of the men were in their mid-fifties and all of them had a documented history of sexual problems.
They were all given 900 mg of ginseng, three times a day for eight weeks. The men experienced significant results.
Sixty percent of them enjoyed improvements in achieving and maintaining erections. The ginseng also fueled their drive for sex.
“The observed improvements represent clinically relevant success,” says Dr. Hong.
Even more evidence supports these findings.
Dr. Miguel Srougi is the professor and chairman of the Department of Urology at the Universidad de Sao Paulo Medical School in Brazil. He’s completed a similar study using ginseng and it yielded the same benefits.
“[Ginseng] is an effective alternative to the invasive approaches for treating male ED,” says Dr. Srougi.
He thinks this alternative is desperately needed. That’s because conventional drugs like Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra eventually stop working and can cause a range of side effects.
But he says this herbal remedy not only has the potential to keep working, but does so without any side effects.
3 More Sexual Benefits
So how does it work for men?
Research shows ginseng reduces stress, trauma, and anxiety…which can all be factors that lead to ED. It may also help support proper hormonal balance, boost mental performance, and help improve blood flow.
Many experts believe ED is caused by weak blood flow to the penis-and that’s what drugs like Viagra mainly aim to address. Ginseng may actually help increase blood flow to the penis by opening blood vessels to allow better circulation.
“Patients with ED are reluctant to depend on a drug to achieve erection,” says Dr. Hong. “Korean red ginseng could be used as a remedy with its beneficial effects.”
The “root” of manhood
Ginseng is one of the most popular herbs in the world. It’s been around for thousands of years. In traditional Chinese medicine, red ginseng is thought to promote “yang” or masculine energy. In fact, its name is derived from a Chinese term that literally means “man root.”
You can find Korean red ginseng – often sold as Panax ginseng – in most health food stores in a variety of forms.
Dosages can vary widely depending on standardization-look for a high standardization percentage and follow the product’s instructions .
