Harvard Study Reveals Diet Secret That Stops Cancer From Coming Back

Harvard researchers have uncovered a simple diet secret that stops cancer from coming back.

Eating at least two ounces of tree nuts a week makes it far less likely that advanced colon cancer will come back after it is treated, according to a new study.

Scientists followed 826 patients with stage 3 colon cancer. Stage 3 means the cancer has spread beyond the original site in the colon. Patients who ate at least two ounces of tree nuts a week were found to have a 42% lower risk of cancer recurrence. They had a 57% reduced risk of death.1

Tree nuts include almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, pecans, and walnuts. Two ounces is the equivalent of about 48 almonds, 36 cashews, 24 hazelnuts, 16 Brazil nuts, 15 pecans, or 14 walnuts.

Peanuts and peanut butter were not shown to have anti-cancer effects.

Researchers say that tree nuts likely are protective against other cancers besides colon cancer. A previous study found that eating nuts every day cuts the risk of any cancer by 15%.2 3

Why Colon Cancer Rates Are Soaring

Colon cancer used to be fairly rare. Then, around 1950, food makers started adding emulsifiers to their products.

Emulsifiers are chemicals that extend shelf life. They make it possible for processed foods to go months, even years, without spoiling.

But emulsifiers also do something terrible to the people who eat them. They alter gut bacteria, promoting inflammation, and triggering colon and rectal cancer.

A study by the American Cancer Society found that colon cancer rates have skyrocketed since the introduction of emulsifiers into the food supply. People born in 1990 have double the risk of colon cancer and quadruple the risk of rectal cancer of those born in 1950.4

Colon cancer is now the second most deadly cancer. It kills about 50,000 Americans each year. Only lung cancer kills more.5

Emulsifiers are found in processed meats, ketchup, mayo, jarred sauces, cakes, peanut butter, margarine, and chewing gum. Besides triggering cancer, they are linked to colitis, obesity, and diabetes.
