You pick up your cellphone every day–sometimes dozens of times–without giving it a second thought. But maybe it’s time to stop and think about what these devices are doing to us.…
There are serious health dangers linked to cellphone use. And researchers keep turning up more… That’s why we’ve put together a list of ways your cellphone can wreck your health. And—more important—how to dodge them.
Studies have found that your phone can:
1. Sabotage Your Happiness
Everyone with a cellphone has done it… Paid more attention to that illuminated screen than the person they’re with. The behavior has become so common that it has earned the nickname “phubbing.” It’s the act of snubbing someone with your phone.
New research shows it can lead to depression.1 That’s because it interrupts quality time and leads to conflicts. And because it causes people to feel less satisfied with their relationships—and life in general.
The solution is simple. If you’re spending time with your partner—or anyone for that matter—keep your phone on silent and out of sight.
2. Interfere With Bedtime
As a Health Watch reader, you know getting adequate sleep is one of the best things you can do for your health. But the blue light emitted from smartphones is a potent suppressor of melatonin. This is a hormone that induces sleep.
Inadequate rest puts you at risk for degenerative brain conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. That’s because your brain clears away toxins while you sleep.
To make the most of your Z’s, keep your phone out of the bedroom. If you need to use it just before you go to sleep, turn down the screen’s brightness to expose yourself to less sleep-robbing blue light. You can also download a “blue light filter” app on some smartphones.
3. Hit Men Below the Belt
Sleep isn’t the only bedtime activity phones can interfere with… A study published in the journal Environment International shows it can destroy human sperm cells. Researchers found that men who carried their phones in their pants pockets experienced a drop in sperm count.2
This could decrease your chances of conceiving. And even more concerning, storing your phone close to your body may cause another kind of harm…
4. Raise Your Risk of This Deadly Condition
Studies link extended cellphone use to an increased risk of brain tumors.3 And one woman developed breast tumors directly over the area where she stored her phone in her bra.4 They grew in a rectangular pattern… Just like the shape of her phone.
Avoid storing your phone in your pocket, bra, or anywhere else on your body. Or put a radio frequency electromagnetic radiation (RF-EMF) shield around your phone. You can find several options online.
Cellphones have become indispensable tools of modern life. But new research shows there are wrong ways and right ways to use them. Stick to these easy tips for the sake of your good health.
