When it comes to your health, there’s no denying the importance of eating enough fruits and vegetables… But how we go about getting more of them in our diets could be doing us more harm than good.
Case in point? The school lunch system in the U.S.
This clip from Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution reveals strict standards for the amount of vegetables a school lunch must meet. That’s a good thing. But at the same time, it shows just how loose the definition of “vegetable” really is:
Sure, a potato is a vegetable—even if it isn’t one we recommend you eat. But any food you deep-fry immediately becomes a junk food. Wouldn’t they be better off with some gently steamed broccoli or sautéed spinach?
So, where do you stand? Should French fries pass for vegetables…or are schools going about nutrition all wrong?
